Discover The 3 Meters dive site on the East coast of Mauritius. A unique shallow reef experience perfect for snorkellers, beginners and macro lovers alike.

Overview

The 3 Meters is one of the East Coast of Mauritius's most accessible and visually rewarding dive sites. Located within the sheltered lagoon system that defines this part of the island, the site takes its name from its signature characteristic: a reef plateau that sits just three metres below the surface. This extreme shallowness means natural light floods the entire dive zone throughout the day, illuminating hard and soft corals with a brilliance that deeper sites simply cannot match.

The site is ideal for beginners completing their first open-water dives, snorkellers wishing to push a little deeper, and experienced divers who appreciate the rare opportunity to take their time exploring intricate coral architecture in calm, well-lit conditions. The lagoon's protective barrier reef shields the area from heavy swells, keeping visibility consistently clear and the surface calm for most of the year.

Marine Life

Despite — or perhaps because of — its shallow depth, The 3 Meters hosts a surprisingly rich tapestry of marine life. The abundant sunlight fuels prolific coral growth, with branching Acropora and plate corals forming miniature underwater cities that serve as refuge and hunting ground for dozens of species.

  • Reef fish: Parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, and wrasse are permanent residents. Shoals of sergeant majors and blue-green chromis hover in mid-water columns above the coral heads.
  • Macro life: Patient divers and photographers will be rewarded by nudibranchs, cleaner shrimps, tiny blennies peering from coral crevices, and the occasional flamboyant cuttlefish hunting along the substrate.
  • Rays and turtles: Green sea turtles are sighted with pleasing regularity, often resting on sandy patches between coral formations. Small stingrays occasionally cruise the sandy lagoon floor nearby.
  • Echinoderms and invertebrates: Sea urchins, starfish, and feather stars add colour and texture to the reef, while moray eels tuck into coral overhangs.

The site's shallow nature concentrates marine activity within easy viewing range, making it an outstanding destination for underwater photography and extended observation at leisure.

Dive Conditions

The 3 Meters lives up to its reputation as a gentle, welcoming dive site. Currents within the lagoon are generally mild to negligible, making navigation easy and air consumption low. Visibility typically ranges from 10 to 20 metres, often reaching its peak during the dry season months when trade winds keep the water clear and calm.

Water temperature on the East Coast fluctuates between approximately 23°C in winter (June–August) and 28–29°C in the austral summer (December–February). A 3mm wetsuit is recommended for the cooler months, while a shorty or even a rash vest will suffice during summer. The maximum depth of three metres means decompression is never a concern, and bottom time is theoretically unlimited — the only limit is your tank.

Best Season to Dive

The East Coast of Mauritius is best enjoyed from October through to May, when the south-east trade winds ease and the lagoon enters its calmest period. December through March brings warm water and excellent visibility, though brief tropical rain showers can occasionally reduce surface light. April and May are often considered a sweet spot — warm, clear, and uncrowded.

The drier winter months of June through August see cooler water temperatures and occasionally stronger south-east trade winds, which can stir up surface chop. However, as a lagoon site, The 3 Meters remains diveable even in these conditions, protected by the outer reef from the worst of the swell.

Tips for Divers

  • Arrive early in the morning for the best light penetration and calmest surface conditions.
  • Use a reef-safe sunscreen — at three metres depth, UV protection still matters and conventional sunscreens harm the very corals you've come to admire.
  • Bring a macro lens; the site rewards slow, attentive diving far more than speed.
  • Buoyancy control is critical on this shallow reef — even slight contact with the coral can cause lasting damage. Practice hovering before your dive.
  • Combine The 3 Meters with a deeper nearby site for a two-dive day that covers the full range of East Coast diving.
Absolutely. The extremely shallow depth of three metres, calm lagoon conditions, and minimal current make this one of the most beginner-friendly dive sites on the East Coast of Mauritius. It's often used for first open-water dives and check dives.
Yes — the site's shallow reef crest means confident snorkellers can observe much of the marine life from the surface. A snorkel, mask, and fins are all you need to appreciate the coral gardens and reef fish below.
Visibility generally ranges from 10 to 20 metres, depending on season and recent weather. The dry season months of April through September tend to offer the clearest water, while summer months can occasionally see slight reductions after heavy rain.
