Sweet Lips is a beloved reef dive site located along the sheltered west coast of Mauritius, a stretch of coastline renowned for its calm lagoons, exceptional visibility, and diverse underwater ecosystems. Positioned within the protection of the fringing reef system, the site offers a relaxed and rewarding dive experience that appeals to a wide range of divers. The reef structure features a combination of hard coral tables, gorgonian fans, and coral bommies that create a layered, textured environment teeming with life at every depth.

The site takes its name from the iconic sweetlips fish — a species known for its pouty, exaggerated lips and bold patterning — that are frequently spotted here in aggregations. Beyond the namesake fish, the site delivers a full sensory experience of colour, movement, and marine drama that keeps divers returning visit after visit. Depths are generally accessible for a broad range of certification levels, making it an excellent choice for both recreational divers and those on guided discovery experiences.

Marine Life

The marine life at Sweet Lips is one of its greatest draws. The coral gardens attract an impressive variety of reef fish, invertebrates, and larger pelagic visitors that pass through the area.

• Sweetlips: The site's star attraction, Oriental and ribbon sweetlips are regularly seen drifting in small to medium-sized groups near coral overhangs and rocky outcrops.
• Moray Eels: Green and honeycomb moray eels are commonly spotted poking from crevices, adding a thrilling edge to the dive.
• Lionfish: Ornate lionfish hover motionless among the coral, their feathery fins splayed in quiet ambush.
• Parrotfish and Surgeonfish: Schools of these vibrant reef fish graze the coral constantly, creating a lively and colourful backdrop.
• Turtles: Green sea turtles are frequently sighted resting on the reef or gliding gracefully overhead — always a highlight for any diver.
• Octopus: Sharp-eyed divers may spot an octopus tucked into a crevice, perfectly camouflaged against the rock.

Dive Conditions

The west coast of Mauritius benefits from the shelter of the main island and its barrier reef, resulting in generally calmer conditions than the windward east coast. Visibility at Sweet Lips is typically excellent, ranging from 15 to 30 metres depending on the season and weather patterns. Water temperatures hover comfortably between 24°C in the austral winter (June–September) and 28°C during the summer months (November–March), making a 3mm wetsuit sufficient for most divers year-round.

Currents at the site are generally mild to moderate, which suits recreational diving well. On rare occasions, stronger surge or current may be present following storms or during tidal shifts, so always check local conditions with your dive operator before entry. The site is typically dived as a guided boat dive departing from nearby western coast dive centres.

Best Season to Dive

Sweet Lips can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the optimal diving window on the west coast of Mauritius falls between May and December. During these months, the southeast trade winds are less likely to affect western lagoon sites, visibility tends to be at its peak, and marine life activity is at its most dynamic. The summer months (January–April) can bring warmer waters and occasional cyclone disturbances, which may temporarily reduce visibility but do not preclude diving entirely. Even in the cyclone season, many west coast sites remain diveable on calm days.

Tips for Diving Sweet Lips

• Book a morning dive when the light penetrates the water at its best angle, illuminating the coral in vivid colour.
• Move slowly and stay low to the reef to avoid startling the sweetlips schools — patience rewards you with extraordinary photo opportunities.
• Bring an underwater torch to illuminate crevices where morays, lobsters, and small critters hide from view.
• Respect the no-touch rule strictly — this reef's health depends on divers maintaining good buoyancy and avoiding contact with coral.
• Combine Sweet Lips with a second west coast dive site for a full day of exploration — many operators offer two-tank packages.
