Silvana is one of the most cherished beginner dive sites along Mauritius's western coastline, situated in the warm, sheltered waters near Tamarin and Black River. This shallow reef dive offers a tranquil underwater environment that feels almost otherworldly in its serenity. With maximum depths of 18 metres and a sandy-bottomed reef starting at just 5 metres, Silvana is ideally suited to newly certified divers, those taking their first ever baptism dive, and snorkellers looking to explore just below the surface.
The reef itself is a patchwork of hard and soft corals, rocky outcrops and sandy channels that create a naturally welcoming habitat for a rich variety of marine life. The absence of any significant current means divers of all experience levels can spend their time relaxed and fully absorbed in the spectacle around them, rather than battling water movement. This makes Silvana not only a top choice for beginners but also a beloved spot for underwater photographers seeking unhurried, stable shooting conditions.
The undisputed stars of Silvana are its sea turtles. It is common to encounter between five and ten individual turtles on a single dive — an extraordinary density that makes this site genuinely exceptional. Both green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) inhabit this reef, and they are remarkably calm around divers, having grown accustomed to respectful human presence over many years.
Watching a hawksbill turtle methodically picking sponges from the coral, or a green turtle resting serenely on a sandy ledge while you hover just a metre away, is a memory that stays with divers long after they return to the surface. Responsible dive guides always remind visitors to maintain a respectful distance and never touch or chase the animals, ensuring this magical relationship between turtles and divers continues for generations to come.
Silvana offers some of the calmest conditions of any dive site in Mauritius. With no measurable current, shallow depths, and generally excellent visibility ranging from 15 to 25 metres, the site is exceptionally forgiving for less experienced divers. The protected position on the western lee side of the island means that even when easterly trade winds pick up, the surface conditions at Silvana remain manageable for most of the year.
Water temperatures hover between 24°C and 29°C depending on the season, making a 3mm wetsuit comfortable year-round, though some divers prefer a shorty or even just a rash vest during the warmer summer months of December through March. The sandy bottom ensures that fin kicks don't stir up sediment easily, helping maintain that exceptional visibility divers appreciate.
Silvana is a genuine all-year dive site. Every month from January through December offers suitable conditions, making it a reliable choice regardless of when you visit Mauritius. The warmest and calmest period runs from October through April, when water temperatures peak and the sea surface is at its most glassy. The cooler austral winter months of June through September bring slightly cooler water temperatures and occasionally stronger easterly winds, but the western coast remains largely sheltered and Silvana continues to deliver outstanding dives.
