Sea Fan Valley West is one of the most visually captivating dive sites on the west coast of Mauritius. True to its name, the site features a gently sloping underwater valley adorned with dense colonies of gorgonian sea fans, soft corals, and vibrant hard coral formations. The protected lagoon environment of the west coast means that visibility is generally excellent and currents remain mild, making it accessible to a broad range of divers. The site lies within reach of popular dive bases operating out of Flic en Flac and Tamarin, two of Mauritius's most celebrated dive hubs.
The underwater terrain descends in a series of sandy channels and coral ridges, creating natural corridors that guide divers through a sequence of ever-changing habitats. Sea fans up to a metre in diameter fan out from rocky outcrops, their intricate lacework structures providing shelter for pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and tiny crustaceans that many divers would otherwise overlook. The combination of macro life and larger pelagic visitors makes Sea Fan Valley West a site that rewards both patient observers and those who prefer a more exploratory style of diving.
The signature attraction is undoubtedly the spectacular gorgonian sea fans that give this site its name. These ancient filter feeders thrive in the gentle current and subdued light conditions, their orange, red, and purple branches creating a stunning visual backdrop for underwater photography. Look closely at their surfaces and you may spot the tiny, perfectly camouflaged pygmy seahorses that cling to the branches.
Sea Fan Valley West benefits from the natural protection afforded by the west coast barrier reef, which buffers the site from heavy swells originating in the Indian Ocean. Currents are generally light to moderate, making navigation straightforward and allowing divers to hover effortlessly over the sea fan gardens without being swept away. Visibility typically ranges from 15 to 25 metres, often reaching exceptional clarity on calm days.
Water temperatures average 26–28°C during summer (November to April) and dip to around 22–24°C in winter (June to September). A 3mm wetsuit is sufficient for most of the year, though a 5mm suit adds welcome comfort during the cooler winter months. Maximum depth at the site is suitable for Open Water certified divers, though those with Advanced or higher certifications will be able to explore the deeper sections of the valley more comfortably.
The west coast of Mauritius is diveable year-round, but conditions at Sea Fan Valley West are at their finest between April and November. During these months, trade winds ease, visibility peaks, and sea temperatures remain comfortable. The cooler winter months of June through August bring some of the clearest water of the year, ideal for photography. Summer months can see occasional cyclonic disturbances that temporarily reduce visibility, but the site recovers quickly once conditions stabilise.
