Discover Colorado, an intermediate reef and cave dive site off Flic en Flac, Mauritius. Explore colourful passages, caves and diverse marine life at 14–25m.

Overview

Located off the popular resort village of Flic en Flac on Mauritius's west coast, Colorado is a well-loved reef and cave dive site that lives up to its evocative name with a landscape as dramatic and colourful as the American state it references. Sitting at depths ranging from 14 to 25 metres, the site is accessible to intermediate divers and offers enough complexity and variety to keep even experienced underwater explorers engaged. The defining feature of Colorado is its remarkable topography — a series of interconnected passages, swim-throughs, overhangs and cavities that carve through the reef and invite exploration at every turn.

The site forms part of the extensive barrier reef system that lines Mauritius's western coastline, sheltered from prevailing trade winds and offering generally calm, clear conditions. The reef structure here is multi-layered, with shallower coral gardens giving way to deeper drop-offs and rocky formations dotted with cavities. Light filters into the passages in dramatic rays, illuminating the colourful encrusting sponges and soft corals that coat the walls in vivid hues of orange, yellow and purple.

Marine Life

Colorado's diverse habitat supports an impressive variety of marine species. The site is especially known for:

  • Barracuda: Large schools of great barracuda are frequently encountered hovering in the blue water above the reef, their silvery bodies catching the light as they move in synchronised formation.
  • Snapper: Red and blue-striped snappers congregate around the reef's overhangs and cavities, often in impressive numbers, adding splashes of vivid colour to the seascape.
  • Nudibranch: Colorado is a paradise for macro enthusiasts. Patient divers willing to peer into crevices and along encrusted walls will discover a remarkable variety of nudibranchs in extraordinary shapes and colours.
  • Other species: Moray eels peer from rocky crevices, lionfish hover near overhangs, and hawksbill turtles are occasionally spotted gliding over the reef. Triggerfish, angelfish and parrotfish round out the colourful cast of residents.

The cave sections of the site host their own micro-ecosystems, with shrimp, small crabs and feather stars thriving in the shelter provided by the rocky formations.

Conditions

Colorado benefits from the natural shelter provided by Mauritius's west coast, making it a relatively comfortable dive in most conditions. Currents are generally light, which is ideal for exploring the passages and cavities without being swept through them. Visibility is typically excellent, often reaching 20–30 metres, allowing divers to appreciate the full scope of the topography.

Water temperatures on the west coast range from around 24°C in the austral winter months (June to August) to 28–29°C during the summer (December to February). A 3mm wetsuit is suitable for most of the year, with a 5mm option providing extra comfort in the cooler months.

Best Season

Colorado can be dived year-round, and its sheltered west coast location means it remains accessible even when conditions elsewhere on the island are less favourable. The summer months from November to April bring warmer water and the possibility of encountering larger pelagic species, while the clearer, cooler winter months from May to October often deliver the best visibility. Whichever time of year you visit, Colorado consistently delivers a rewarding dive.

Tips for Diving Colorado

  • Take your time navigating the passages and cavities — rushing means missing the incredible macro life hidden on the walls.
  • Carry a torch or dive light to illuminate the interior of the cave sections and reveal the true colours of the encrusting organisms.
  • Maintain excellent buoyancy control in the narrower passages to avoid damaging the fragile reef formations.
  • Keep an eye on your depth as the site descends to 25 metres — manage your bottom time carefully to allow a relaxed exploration of the shallower sections.
  • Book early morning dives for the calmest surface conditions and best light penetration into the passages.

Getting There

Colorado is easily reached by boat from Flic en Flac, one of Mauritius's most active dive hubs. Numerous PADI-certified dive centres operate from the village, and the site is typically a short 10–15 minute boat ride from the shore. Most operators include Colorado in their regular rotation of west coast dive sites.

Colorado is rated as an intermediate dive site. Divers should be comfortable at depths up to 25 metres and have some experience navigating reef passages and cave environments. An Open Water certification with logged dives is recommended as a minimum.
Yes, Colorado features several cavities and cave-like passages that are one of the site's main attractions. These are generally not deep penetration caves, but rather swim-throughs and overhangs that require a torch and good buoyancy control to enjoy safely.
Absolutely — Colorado is considered an excellent macro dive site. A wide variety of nudibranchs can be found on the encrusted walls of the passages and cavities. Bring a dive light and move slowly to spot these tiny, brilliantly coloured creatures.
