Canyon East is a captivating dive site located off the east coast of Mauritius, one of the island's most scenic and diverse underwater environments. As its name suggests, the site is defined by a series of underwater canyons and gullies that slice through the reef structure, creating dramatic topography that rewards both exploration and photography. The east coast of Mauritius is known for its calmer seas relative to the exposed south and west, making sites like Canyon East accessible for a good portion of the year.

The reef structure here is a fascinating mix of coral-encrusted canyon walls, sandy gullies, and open reef plateaus. The canyons themselves funnel water and nutrients, which in turn attract a wide variety of fish and invertebrates. Divers can expect to navigate passages that open into wider chambers, offering a sense of discovery with every turn. The site is suitable for intermediate to advanced divers given the depth range and the need for good buoyancy control within the canyon passages.

Marine Life

Canyon East boasts a rich and varied marine ecosystem. The nutrient-rich currents that pass through the canyon corridors support an impressive diversity of life at every level of the water column. Among the highlights divers regularly encounter:

• Reef fish: Large schools of snappers, fusiliers, and sergeant majors are common sights along the canyon walls. Groupers and lionfish lurk in crevices, while parrotfish graze across the coral surfaces.
• Pelagics: The open water above the canyon rim sometimes brings encounters with trevally, barracuda, and the occasional reef shark patrolling the deeper sections.
• Invertebrates: The canyon walls are adorned with sea fans, sponges, and nudibranchs in a spectacular array of colors. Moray eels are frequently spotted peering from crevices.
• Turtles: Green and hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the east coast reefs and are often seen resting or feeding near the canyon rim.
• Rays: Eagle rays and occasionally stingrays can be seen gliding gracefully across the sandy channels between canyon sections.

Dive Conditions

Canyon East experiences conditions typical of Mauritius's east coast. Visibility is generally good, ranging from 15 to 25 metres depending on the season and weather conditions. The east coast benefits from the shelter of the barrier reef for much of the year, though trade winds can stir surface conditions. Currents within the canyon can range from mild to moderate, and on stronger current days the site takes on a drift-dive character that experienced divers will find exhilarating.

Water temperatures hover between 24°C and 28°C throughout the year, with the warmer months from November to April bringing the most pleasant thermal conditions. A 3mm wetsuit is comfortable for most of the year, while some divers opt for a 5mm suit during the cooler austral winter months of June through August.

Best Season to Dive

The best time to dive Canyon East is during the Mauritian summer, from October through April, when water temperatures are warmest and visibility tends to be at its clearest. The southeast trade winds that characterize the Mauritian winter (May to September) can make the east coast choppy at the surface, though diving is still possible on calmer days. The shoulder months of October and April often offer an excellent balance of good conditions and fewer crowds.

Tips for Divers

• Ensure your buoyancy is well-practiced before entering the canyon passages to avoid damaging the delicate coral formations on the walls.
• Carry a surface marker buoy (SMB) as boat traffic in the area can be active, especially during peak season.
• Arrive early in the morning for the calmest surface conditions and the best natural light filtering into the canyons.
• Bring an underwater torch to illuminate the spectacular colors within the darker canyon recesses.
• Check with your local dive operator for current conditions before the dive, as the east coast can be affected by seasonal weather patterns.

Canyon East is best accessed by boat from the east coast dive centres operating out of towns such as Trou d'Eau Douce, Belle Mare, or Mahebourg. Most reputable dive operators on the east coast offer guided dives to Canyon East and can pair it with other nearby sites for a full day of exploration on the reef.
