Battery

Overview

Battery is one of the West Coast of Mauritius's well-regarded dive sites, situated in the sheltered waters that characterise this side of the island. Protected by the outer barrier reef, the West Coast is famous for its calm conditions, excellent visibility, and rich biodiversity. Battery takes its name from historical coastal fortifications that once guarded the island, lending the site a sense of history as well as natural beauty. The site features a series of coral gardens, rocky outcrops, and sandy channels that combine to create a diverse underwater topography ideal for leisurely exploration dives.

The reef structure at Battery is a textbook example of Mauritius's fringing reef system. Divers descend through the water column to encounter a gently sloping reef adorned with hard and soft corals. Table corals, brain corals, and fan corals compete for space across the substrate, forming colourful canopies that attract an enormous variety of fish and invertebrates. The sandy gullies between coral heads are equally rewarding, offering habitats for bottom-dwelling species and the occasional resting reef shark.

Marine Life

Battery punches well above its weight when it comes to marine biodiversity. The reef is a reliable hunting ground for some of the Indian Ocean's most charismatic species. Divers regularly report encounters with the following:

• Moray eels – Both honeycomb and giant moray eels peer from crevices throughout the reef, their muscular bodies curling through coral overhangs.
• Octopus – Masters of camouflage, octopuses are frequently spotted hunting along the sandy margins of the reef, especially during dusk dives.
• Lionfish and scorpionfish – These ornate ambush predators are well camouflaged among the coral, rewarding attentive divers with spectacular close-up encounters.
• Parrotfish and wrasse – Large schools of parrotfish graze noisily on the coral, while cleaner wrasse dart between larger fish at dedicated cleaning stations.
• Turtles – Green and hawksbill turtles are occasional visitors, drifting gracefully past divers with characteristic calm.
• Reef sharks – Blacktip reef sharks are sometimes seen patrolling the outer edges of the reef, adding a thrilling dimension to the dive.
• Nudibranchs and macro life – For macro enthusiasts, the reef surface is peppered with colourful nudibranchs, shrimps, and tiny gobies.

Dive Conditions

The West Coast of Mauritius is generally regarded as the most diveable stretch of coastline, particularly during the southern hemisphere winter months. Battery benefits from the protection afforded by the outer barrier reef, which significantly dampens wave action and surge. Visibility at Battery typically ranges from 15 to 25 metres, with the clearest conditions occurring during the dry season. Water temperatures remain comfortably warm throughout the year, hovering between 24°C in winter and 29°C during summer, so a 3mm wetsuit is usually sufficient for most divers.

Currents at Battery are generally mild and manageable, making it accessible to divers of varying experience levels. Occasional light currents can actually enhance the experience by bringing in plankton and encouraging pelagic visitors to approach the reef. Surface conditions are typically calm, making boat entries and exits straightforward and comfortable.

Best Season

While Battery can be dived year-round, the optimal period runs from April through to November. During these months, the southeast trade winds are either absent or moderate, keeping surface conditions glassy and calm on the West Coast. Visibility is at its peak from May to September. The summer months of December through March bring warmer water temperatures and the possibility of whale shark sightings in Mauritian waters, though surface conditions can be less predictable due to occasional tropical disturbances.

Tips for Diving Battery

• Arrive early in the morning for the calmest conditions and best light penetration into the reef.
• Take your time on the sandy patches between coral heads – this is where much of the macro life hides.
• Bring an underwater torch to illuminate overhangs where moray eels, lobsters, and sleeping fish congregate.
• Practice good buoyancy control to protect the fragile coral formations from accidental contact.
• Ask your local dive guide about the best entry points and current conditions on the day of your dive.
• A surface marker buoy (SMB) is recommended for safety, particularly when diving from a boat.
