Situated just off the popular beach village of Pereybere on Mauritius's northern coast, Aquarium is a shallow coral reef dive site renowned for its remarkable marine biodiversity and excellent visibility. The site sits within a protected lagoon area, making it one of the most accessible and beginner-friendly dives on the island. The reef begins at around 5 metres and gently slopes down to approximately 18 metres, providing a comfortable range for divers of all experience levels. Its proximity to the shore also makes it a top pick for snorkellers who want to explore without scuba gear.
The name 'Aquarium' is entirely apt — the reef is so densely populated with tropical fish and so visually rich that it resembles a perfectly curated marine display. Local dive centres in Grand Baie and Pereybere regularly bring groups here, and it remains a perennial favourite on the North Mauritius diving circuit.
Aquarium Pereybere is an outstanding site for fish life and coral diversity. The reef supports a remarkable cast of Indo-Pacific species, and divers are almost guaranteed outstanding encounters on every visit. Highlights include:
The coral itself is a key attraction. Hard coral formations, including brain corals and table corals, provide a structural backdrop, while soft corals and sea fans add colour and movement. Invertebrates such as sea urchins, starfish, and nudibranchs can be found in the nooks of the reef for those with a keen eye for macro life.
Aquarium Pereybere benefits from the sheltered conditions typical of the northern lagoon. Currents are generally mild, making navigation straightforward and comfortable for entry-level divers. Visibility ranges from 15 to 25 metres on a good day, though it can be reduced slightly after heavy rainfall or during choppy weather. Water temperatures hover between 23°C in the cooler austral winter months (June–August) and up to 29°C in the warm summer season (November–April). A 3mm wetsuit is comfortable for most of the year, though some divers prefer a full 5mm suit during the cooler months.
Aquarium can be dived year-round, but the best conditions are typically found from October to April, when warm water, light winds, and exceptional visibility coincide. The cyclone season (January–March) can occasionally bring rough surface conditions, but the site's sheltered lagoon position means it remains diveable in most weather windows. The dry winter months of June to September offer cooler but clear water, which is particularly appealing for photographers seeking sharp images. May and October are often considered the sweet spot, with warm water and relatively calm seas.
