Discover Aquarium North in Mauritius — a stunning shallow reef teeming with colourful fish, corals, and marine life. Perfect for beginners and snorkelers.

Overview

Aquarium North is a shallow, sheltered reef dive site located off the northern coast of Mauritius, not far from the popular resort town of Grand Baie. True to its nickname, the site resembles a living aquarium — teeming with colourful reef fish, vibrant hard and soft corals, and an astonishing variety of marine creatures at virtually every turn. The site is accessible by boat from Grand Baie and is frequently visited by both dive operators and snorkelling excursion boats, making it one of the most popular underwater destinations in the region.

The reef sits at a comfortable depth range, typically between 5 and 15 metres, making it ideal for beginners, open water students, and snorkellers while still offering enough variety to keep experienced divers engaged. The sandy seabed between coral formations provides excellent visibility, often reaching 20–30 metres on calm days. The protected lagoon environment means conditions are generally mild, and the site can be dived year-round.

Marine Life

Aquarium North earns its name with an extraordinary cast of reef inhabitants. Divers can expect to encounter:

  • Reef Fish: Sergeant majors, butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, and wrasse are ever-present, often approaching divers with curiosity.
  • Moray Eels: Several species of moray eels can be found tucked into coral crevices, including the giant moray and honeycomb moray.
  • Octopus and Cephalopods: Keep an eye on sandy patches and rubble zones for camouflaged octopus and cuttlefish.
  • Sea Turtles: Green and hawksbill turtles are occasional visitors to the site, often seen grazing on sea grass or resting near coral heads.
  • Rays: Blue-spotted ribbontail rays are commonly found resting on the sandy bottom between coral formations.
  • Nudibranchs and Macro Life: Patient divers will be rewarded with nudibranchs, cleaner shrimp, and various invertebrates hidden among the coral.

The reef itself is a patchwork of staghorn and brain corals, sea fans, and sponges, providing habitat for a huge diversity of species. Cleaner stations are active throughout the reef, where small wrasse and shrimp service larger fish — a mesmerising behaviour to observe.

Diving Conditions

Aquarium North benefits from its sheltered position within the northern lagoon of Mauritius. The site is generally calm, with minimal current — ideal for newer divers and those who prefer a relaxed, exploratory pace underwater. Visibility is typically excellent, ranging from 15 to 30 metres depending on season and weather. Water temperatures hover between 24°C in the cooler austral winter months (June–September) and 28–29°C during summer (November–March), meaning a 3mm wetsuit is comfortable year-round, though some divers opt for a shorty or skin suit in summer.

The depth range of roughly 5–15 metres means dive times can be extended comfortably, with bottom times of 45–60 minutes common for recreational divers. The site's shallow nature also makes it excellent for multiple dives in a day.

Best Season

Aquarium North can be dived throughout the year, but conditions are generally at their finest between April and November, when winds are lighter and visibility is at its peak. The dry season (May to October) brings the clearest water and most stable conditions. During the wet season (December to March), brief periods of reduced visibility may occur after heavy rain or swell, but the site remains diveable on most days. Summer months also bring warmer water temperatures, which can increase marine activity and make the dive even more vibrant.

Practical Tips

  • Book with a Grand Baie dive operator for easy boat access — the site is typically a short 10–20 minute boat ride from shore.
  • Arrive early in the morning for the best visibility and fewer boats on the surface.
  • Bring an underwater torch even on day dives — it illuminates the true colours of corals and helps spot hidden creatures in crevices.
  • Respect the marine environment: avoid touching the coral or chasing wildlife, and maintain good buoyancy control.
  • This site is ideal for Open Water certification dives or discover scuba diving experiences.
  • Snorkellers can enjoy the shallower sections of the reef without scuba equipment — the upper reef is just 1–3 metres in places.
Absolutely. Aquarium North is one of the most beginner-friendly dive sites in Mauritius, with shallow depths, calm conditions, and excellent visibility making it ideal for first-time divers and Open Water students.
Yes, the site is very popular with snorkellers. The upper sections of the reef are just 1–3 metres deep and packed with colourful fish and coral, making it a fantastic snorkelling destination without the need for scuba equipment.
While the site is diveable year-round, the best conditions are generally from May to October during the dry season, when visibility is highest and winds are calmest. Water temperatures are warm enough for comfortable diving in all months.
